The Official Charley Home Page
Mercinary Territory

Hello, I'm Charley Smith, the mercinary bass player. The Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan is my musical domain. I claim no affiliation, offering my services to any band in need of a bottom line. I'm not limited to any one style, band, or school of thought. I am eclectic by default, versatility being the key to my survival.
If you're not familiar with the state of Michigan, look at the back of your left hand. I'm at the tip of your ring finger. Go figure.
I write and record songs in the hopes of someday selling one. I've got some pretty good ones, really. In my primary band, Blue Rider, we do some of them live. Folks seem to like them well enough.
The picture is of me working dilligently on my first novel. It's the story of a young man named Chris Masson who moves to mythical Chapman County, Michigan to escape his past. Once there he learns of the mysterious disappearance of a local musician named Willy Dunn and soon after the missing man forces Chris to take a hard look at his life choices. Chance encounters with Willy's girlfriend ("Psycho" Susan), Lisa the Barista and Gig Moore and his Know Moore Blues Review leads Chris to the ultimate conclusion that you can't accept the future until you've reconciled the past.
I only need 999 more chimps with typewriters and my story will be ready for print.

There's nothing like blue water in the cockpit.
One of my favorite summer activities is racing sail boats. In the past I have sailed on the racing yacht HOO-AHH, a Capri 30, and before that I was on the racing yacht Pygmallian, a C&C 33. This summer I'm looking forward to sailing to Beaver Island on the J22 Swine Flew. I am what they call a grinder: I trim the headsail. I also love to fly the spinaker. This is a picture of the J-22 fleet of the Charlevoix Yacht Club during the late autumn "Arena Races". They keep going late into the season, rain, sleet, snow or shine, the excitement culminating with the Cranberry Cup around Turkeyday weekend. Look for them every Sunday after noon starting around mid-October.

Miscellaneous Be Yes
Here I am with Texas the Armadillo, my travelling companion. We travel the width and length of Northern Michigan playing music and looking for cool stuff. Okay, I sing, Texas just hums the words. Like stuffed armadillos can sing. Right.
